Agent is a 2023 Indian Telugu-language action spy film directed by Surender Reddy and starring Akhil Akkineni, Mammootty, Dino Morea and others. The high-octane film revolves around an aspiring young spy named Ramakrishna (Akhil) who goes on a dangerous mission to take down a terrorist organization planning to spread a deadly virus.

With slick action sequences shot across exotic locales, Agent promised to be an entertaining thriller. However, it received mostly negative reviews from critics and performed poorly at the box office due to flaws in its screenplay and execution. You may think of this movie as the other Action movie Tiger 3, but it is not so.

The first half

The film opens with a RAW chief named Colonel Mahadev being interrogated about a failed mission to kill two terrorists working for an organization called “The Syndicate.” In a flashback, we’re introduced to Ramakrishna “Ricky,” an enthusiastic young man desperately wanting to become a RAW agent despite repeated failures. Impressed by his capability, Mahadev sends Ricky on an undercover mission to capture Dharma, the head of The Syndicate.

After interval

It is revealed Dharma is a former RAW agent who went rogue after being forced by Mahadev to kill his girlfriend. He now plans to spread a deadly virus called “Super Cells.” During a shootout, the device containing the virus is damaged, causing a technical glitch. Ricky manages to kill the Central Minister, who is Dharma’s handler. He then heads to Kashmir to get more intelligence but is arrested by the police. In a surprise twist, his arrest was a ploy by Mahadev and Ricky to uncover Dharma’s plan.

Meanwhile, the virus device is fixed, and Dharma arranges an auction to sell it to the highest bidder. Mahadev learns of this from Ricky and sends him to steal the names of active RAW agents stored in the device. However, Dharma finds out about Ricky’s plan and confronts Mahadev – forcing him to shoot himself at gunpoint. A distraught Ricky then tracks down Dharma, kills him, and stops the virus missiles before heading on a new mission called “Rabbit Fire.”

Main roles:

Akhil Akkineni plays the protagonist Ramakrishna “Ricky,” an extremely skilled yet luckless aspiring spy hell-bent on becoming a RAW agent. Akhil portrays Ricky’s boundless energy, physicality, and intensity aptly through his performance. He conveys the character’s frustration at repeated failures but also his relentless, never-say-die attitude in chasing his ambition. Ricky’s combat skills and daring nature are also depicted well by Akhil.

Mammootty essays RAW Chief Mahadev, Ricky’s gruff mentor who assigns him the dangerous mission to infiltrate Dharma’s organization. Mammootty brings an imposing persona and brooding intensity, befitting his no-nonsense character. Through subtle expressions and delivery, he conveys Mahadev’s cunning intelligence as well as his regrets over past decisions.

Dino Morea plays the primary antagonist, Dharma, the vicious mastermind behind The Syndicate spreading the virus. Morea plays the menacing villain with sinister charm and smooth composure. He depicts Dharma’s cold ruthlessness underpinned by rage over his forced past actions. The layers of his character are brought out effectively by Morea.

Music in Agent

The high-voltage music of Agent is composed by the Tamil music duo Hiphop Tamizha, who creates an energetic soundtrack matching the Action film narrative. After Thaman S opted out due to scheduling issues, Hiphop Tamizha took over composing duties.

The fast-paced “Malli Malli” sets the pace with a catchy tune and vocals by the composers themselves. “Endhe Endhe” brings contrast with a melodious, romantic flavour rendered beautifully by Padmalatha and Sanjith Hegde. The title track, “Rama Krishna,” is a heroic, inspirational anthem celebrating the lead character’s journey, sung powerfully by Ram Miriyala.

The peppy “Wild Saala” features vocals by popular singers like Bheems Ceciroleo, Sravana Bhargavi, and Swathi Reddy – and encapsulates Ricky’s carefree and adventurous personality. Overall, the pulsating songs infuse energy into the narrative. However, some felt the music remained functional without being memorable.

Critical Reception of Telugu film Agent

The agent received largely negative reviews from critics who felt it failed to deliver a tight spy thriller in spite of all its action spectacle.

123Telugu gave 2.5 stars, citing a predictable story, over-the-top scenes, and a silly climax – but praised Akhil’s performance and action sequences.

The Times of India’s review felt the film commits a blasphemy of being boring despite Akhil’s wild act.

India Today’s critics called it a mediocre spy thriller riddled with logical loopholes right from the start.

The New Indian Express review termed it an average action flick torn between Surender Reddy’s grand vision and Akhil’s stardom.

Cinema Express criticized the film for having very little logic, which led to a tedious experience.

The News Minute’s scathing 1-star review blasted the film’s excessive subplots and found barely any connection to actual espionage.

In conclusion, Agent is an action thriller that shows initial promise but fails to deliver a smart, engaging spy story – instead getting bogged down by logical inconsistencies, lack of coherence, and over-the-top execution. While leads Akhil Akkineni and Mammootty give convincing performances and Surender Reddy brings his trademark slick action, they cannot salvage the film’s flawed writing and screenplay.

Barring a few entertaining moments, Agent doesn’t come together as the intelligent spy flick it aspired to be. It ends up as a loud, formulaic, and illogical action drama. For fans of the genre and lead stars, it offers decent one-time entertainment with lowered expectations. But even hardcore action buffs will likely find the film coming up short both critically and commercially. With tighter writing and a grounded narrative, Agent could have left a more memorable impression than just ending up as yet another wasted opportunity.
