Guntur Kaaram

Guntur Kaaram is an upcoming 2024 Indian Telugu-language action drama film directed by acclaimed filmmaker Trivikram Srinivas. With a powerful cast headlined by superstar Mahesh Babu along with Sreeleela, Meenakshi Chaudhary and Ramya Krishna, the film promises an entertaining mix of Best Action films, drama and emotions.

The storyline follows Ramana (Mahesh Babu), whose life is turned upside down following an attack on his father Satyam’s mirchi factory in 1998. Over the years, Ramana loses his mother and eyesight in one eye but is determined to uncover the truth behind the attack. When Ramana’s estranged mother Vasundhara becomes a minister 25 years later, their paths cross again, leading to shocking secrets and twists.

Storyline of the Guntur Kaaram

The film traces the journey of Ramana over 25 years as he goes from being an innocent child to a rowdy seeking vengeance. With powerful politicians and goons involved, Ramana has his task cut out.

Before Interval

In 1998, hooligans Marx and Lenin burn down Satyam’s mirchi factory in Guntur. When Satyam questions them, his relative kills Lenin but Satyam takes the blame and goes to jail. In the accident, Satyam’s son Ramana loses vision in one eye. Seeing this, his wife Vasundhara leaves Ramana to live with her father Venkata Swamy.

25 years later, Venkata Swamy makes Vasundhara a minister but needs Ramana to relinquish ties with her to avoid political attacks. However, Ramana wants to meet his mother before signing any document but Vasundhara wants nothing to do with him.

After Interval

With political rivalry at its peak, Ramana finds himself amidst betrayal and deceit. It is revealed that the attack on the factory 25 years ago was orchestrated by none other than Venkata Swamy himself.

As Ramana races to uncover more dark secrets and save his family from the clutch of corrupt politicians, the plot takes thrilling twists. The climax reveals whether Ramana is able to exact revenge on his enemies and reunite with his family.

Main Roles

The film features Mahesh Babu in one of his most powerful and intense roles yet as the protagonist Veera Venkata Ramana alias “Rowdy” Ramana. Mahesh seems perfectly cast as the angry young man seeking vengeance against the people that destroyed his family and life.

Sreeleela plays the lead actress role of Amulya “Ammu”, the daughter of lawyer Pani who works for Venkata Swamy. She is shown to be Ramana’s romantic interest in the film. This is Sreeleela’s first film opposite Mahesh Babu after her debut with Pelli SandaD.

Veteran actress Ramya Krishna portrays the role of Minister Vasundhara, Ramana’s estranged mother who abandoned him as a child. Her character graph goes from being cold-hearted to making emotional reconnections later. As a powerful politician now, Vasundhara’s ties to Ramana threaten her position.

Prakash Raj plays the cunning politician Venkata Swamy, Vasundara’s father and Ramana’s grandfather. Described as an endearing yet scary character, he seems set to have shades of grey using his daughter for personal political ambitions.

Actor Jayaram portrays Satyam, Vasundhara’s first husband and Ramana’s biological father. The warmsequences where he bonds with his son in the child portions cement their loving relationship, making his death even more tragic.

The main antagonist role is played by actor Jagapathi Babu as the fiery gangster Marx seeking to destroy Satyam. With the tagline promising the “biggest showdown”, his confrontations with Mahesh promise high voltage action.

Supporting Players

Beyond the main leads, the supporting cast consists of acclaimed character actors who represent the many power games at play.

Rao Ramesh plays Vasundhara’s second husband Narayana while Eeswari Rao portrays Bujji, Satyam’s sister. Sunil provides comic relief as the eccentric goon Lenin. Other key roles are played by Vennela Kishore as Balu, P. Ravi Shankar as opposition leader Kata Madhu and Rahul Ravindran as Vasundhara’s adopted son.

Each supporting character adds layers to the narrative – whether it is loyalty, deceit, emotional bonds or political conspiracies that tie the main leads together. Their shades of grey make it hard to distinguish friends from foes as Ramana navigates this complex maze.

In a special appearance, actress Poorna features in the high energy mass number “Kurchi Madathapetti” alongside Mahesh Babu. This song comes at a pivotal point, acting as a pre-climax celebratory sequence before the mystery unveils.

With nearly 20 prominent supporting characters played by veteran actors, Guntur Kaaram and Hanuman has assembled an impressive ensemble cast. Their interplay with the protagonist Mahesh promises to keep the proceedings gripping and infuse the storyline with plenty of twists and turns.

Filming and Casting of Guntur Kaaram

The film was announced in mid-2021 under the working title SSMB28. Pooja Hegde was initially signed on as the lead actress but was later replaced by Sreeleela due to date issues. Meenakshi Chaudhary took on the second lead role.

Principal photography commenced in September 2022 but was halted midway to rework the script into a family entertainer. Trivikram roped in strong actors like Ramya Krishna and Jayaram during this rewrite phase, significantly changing the film’s subject.

Shooting resumed in January 2023, constructed lavish house set pieces spending 10 crores. By June 2023, more than 50% of the movie was shot after which Manoj Paramahamsa took over as cinematographer from P.S. Vinod. The last schedule wrapped up by December 2023.

With a storyline spanning 25 years revolving around politics, corruption and power play, Guntur Kaaram promises to showcase Mahesh Babu in a gripping performance. Trivikram has shown his penchant for blending action, emotions and family elements in his past films like Athadu and Aravinda Sametha Veera Raghava.

If the trailer is anything to go by, Guntur Kaaram seems to follow a similar template – bulked up hero, high voltage action sequences aided by Anbariv stunt directors and Trivikram trademark humour.

Releasing amidst Sankranti festivities, the film is one of the most awaited Telugu releases this year. With the Trivikram-Mahesh Babu combo returning after over a decade since Athadu, the expectations are understandably sky-high. It remains to be seen whether Guntur Kaaram delivers a Pongal dhamaka at the box office.
