Inspiration for Yaariyan 2

Based on the 2014 Malayalam hit, Bangalore Days, Yaariyan 2’s plot focuses on the lives and relationships between three cousins; namely,

Shikhar Randhawa, Bajrang Das Khatri and Laadli Chibber. What follows is a narrative that perfectly blends their individual struggles

and aspirations to bring the audience a great blend of drama and emotions.

Laadli’s journey

Kicking off, the audience is introduced to Laadli, a thalassemia survivor in Shimla. Laadli is shown as a helpless soul torn between the aspirations of her mother and her own dreams of winning a beauty contest. And as her relation with her husband starts to get strained it reaches a pivotal point, which prompts Laadli to return to Mumbai and live with her cousins.

The narrative does a beautiful job of capturing Laadli’s resilience through all odds on her journey to self-discovery. Quite an emphasis from the creators to depict a character that breaks forth societal norms to pursue personal dreams.

Shikhar and Bajju

Shikhar Randhawa is introduced to the audience as a stunt biker and racer who lives a life of adrenaline and excitement. This helps set the tone for the exhilarating moments in the film. Randhawa’s complex relationships and unpredictability forms a substantial part of the runtime. His love interest, Ikroor adds a new layer to Randhawa’s character. And as the story slowly unfolds the challenges in their love story,

we are shown the true reflection on their unwavering love. Bajju’s story takes a whole different turn as reeling from a recent heartbreak, he suddenly finds the love in an unexpected encounter on a train.

As the three cousins cross paths and their tales interweave, it makes way for a captivating narrative that forces the audience to explore the complexities of love, family and personal dreams. It leads up to a climax that ties up most of the loose ends by the time the credits roll to offer a very satisfying character arc for all.

The production of Yaariyan 2

The film went through multiple phases of shoot and development after the initial announcement in October 2022.

Development

Directors Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru came in with their skills after a successful directorial debut in films like Lucky:

No Time for Love and Sanam Teri Kasam. With the announcement of the film, the creators hinted at a May 2023 release date. However, producing banner T-Series later shifted the release date to October 2023 to further fuel anticipation among the fans.

Filming schedule

Initial shoot for the film began in June 2022 in Shimla which contributed to the scenic backdrops of the film. The crew then moved to Mumbai to shoot for the urban scenes during the second schedule of the shoot. Locations like the iconic Charni Road railway station overbridge in Mumbai were chosen for filming major scenes. The crew went international to shoot in the UK as well.

However, filming took a hit when Divya Khosla Kumar was injured when filming for an action sequence. The outskirts of Bangalore also served as a backdrop for some scenes to further add to the diversity of the film’s visual appeal.

Controversies of Yaariyan 2

The journey from production to final release was not all rainbows and sunshine for the creators as they got their fair share of controversies. Creators faced backlash from the Sikh Talmel Committee who filed an FIR against

the film to object against a scene that features Meezaan Jafri wearing a kirpan in the song, Saure Ghar. According to the official reports, the committee alleged that,

since Jafri is a non-baptised Sikh, he is not allowed to wear a kirpan.

Fuel was added to the fire when the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee lodged a complaint against producing banner T-Series,

the directors and actor Meezaan Jafri, accusing them of intentionally arousing religious sentiments. According to the Indian Penal Code, this offence is tried under the Section 295A.

Clear point

In response to all the backlash regarding the scene with the kirpan, the actors and creators have issued a public apology and clarified that the actor was wearing a Khukri and not a kirpan. Khukri is a weapon that wields no cultural or religious significance. Also, the creators were prompt to take off the contentious scene after the incident. Though quite unfortunate, this incident did not overshadow the overall experience of the film.

Yaariyan 2, with its blend of lovely cinematography, a compelling storyline, and noteworthy performances from the cast, successfully continues the legacy of its predecessor. The film navigates through the complexities of relationships, personal aspirations,

and societal expectations, delivering a tale that resonates with a diverse audience. The character arcs of Laadli, Shikhar, and Bajju are carefully crafted, allowing each actor to shine in their respective roles. The seamless integration of emotional depth, romance,
